Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and Director of Radio Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu will appear before the court of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) sitting in Abuja, today over the infringement of his human rights.
Recall the legal team of Mr. Kanu filed a suit against the Federal Government of Nigeria at the ECOWAS court of justice in 2015, for ‘gross misconduct and violation of his human right and court orders’, stating that he should be released unconditionally.
Despite meeting the bail conditions set, the Nigeria’s Department of State Security(DSS), violated such orders as they failed to release Mr Kanu, which led to his lawyer, Barr. Ifeanyi Ejiofor, to file an application to secure his bail at the ECOWAS Court.
Kanu is fighting for an independent state for Biafra, a fight the President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari has warned against, stressing that Mr. Kanu and other agitators should forget ‘Biafra’.
Recall the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB, began the agitation some years ago.
The Raph Uwazuruike led group later slacked in the race for the creation of Biafra, which later gave birth to Nnamdi Kanu led Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB).
Recall also that the agitation for the creation of Biafra Republic gained momentum since the leader of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) and Director of Radio Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu was arrested by the Department of State Services in October 2015.
Meanwhile, Kanu alongside his co-accused, Benjamin Madubugwu and David Nwawuisi are facing a six-count charge of treasonable felony, brought against them by the Federal Government of Nigeria.
Although they have been granted bail twice by a federal high court sitting in Abuja, President Muhammadu Buhari’s led government has refused to obey the court orders raising doubts over the possibility of Mr. Kanu and his co-accused regaining freedom.
