BREAKING: Reps To Probe Killing of Biafrans, Others, Summon IGP

Nigeria's House of Representatives, yesterday, summoned the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Idris Ibrahim, to appear before its committees on Police Affairs and Human Rights over the renewed cases of extrajudicial killings in the country .

Specifically, the IGP is expected to give insight into various extrajudicial killings and, at the same time, suggest steps to prevent future occurrences.

This came few months after the House convened a public hearing on extrajudicial killings and other high profile murders and kidnappings across the country and condemned the recurring cases of extrajudicial killing of members of the Independent Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) and the Movement for the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) who staged a peaceful protest in the South East region.
IPOB and MASSOB are separatist organisations seeking the secession of former Eastern region from Nigeria.

The representatives also resolved to investigate the recent killings of four young people in Ekeki community in Bayelsa State, one of them a footballer with the 3SC Football Club of Ibadan, by the Nigeria Police Force/JTF.
According to a motion of urgent national importance, sponsored by the member representing Yenegoa/Kolokuma federal constituency, Douye Diri, the police/JTF officers had shot and killed four innocent Nigerians, including the footballer. Others killed were 17-year-old Innocent Kokorifa, a 30-year-old man referred to as Inyan and five-year-old Godsgift Oduku.

“In the last two weeks, the Nigerian Police Force, Bayelsa State, Command/ JTF had shot and killed four innocent Nigerians, namely Innocent Kokorifa, 17.
“Others are Izu Joseph, footballer with Shooting Stars Football Club of Ibadan; Inyan, 30, and Godsgift Oduku, a five-year-old girl.
“The trend, if not checked, may lead to a breakdown of law and order in a situation where the people will be forced to defend themselves from attacks from the very police who have been paid by the tax payers to protect them,” he noted.
