About 50 groups from the South-East and South-South demanded the immediate release of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader Nnamdi Kanu in Enugu on Saturday.
The groups, consisting of Christian bodies, town unions and youth organizations, also threatened to join IPOB should their demands not be met.
In a statement released following a meeting between the groups, the Federal Government was urged to obey a December 2015 court ruling which ordered the release of the detained leader
“Pursuit of self-determination is the inalienable right of all oppressed people the world over as endorsed by the United Nations’ charter on freedom. We are being forced by the uncompromising attitude of the oppressor to defend and protect the future of our progeny. The current master-servant relationship as typified by the unworkable, military constitution is suffocating us. Enough is enough.”
Chimezie Ubani, President of the Igbo Students' Union, has since claimed that students in institutions in the South-East have resolved to join IPOB in protest of Kanu's continued detention.
In addition, Ubani also revealed that the students have already printed out identity cards are a sign of their support for IPOB.
