How Buhari and Buharist Created the Niger Delta AvengersBy George Onmonya

The Greek philosopher Thucydides once wrote that "People go to war out of honour, fear and interest." In this short verse he summarized it all. The General who told Nigerians to refer to him as president immediately he takes over as King of Aso Rock villa wanted so bad to be referred to as democrat, but he hadn't learned much about democracy over the years despite contesting severally under a democratic elected government and losing before he finally won.
Despite his first speech of "I belong to nobody..." Buhari, his utterances and actions shows that he was angry with certain parts of the country for not voting him. His advisers and supporters kept cheering the old man.
On his first trip to the US, the man told a journalist during an interview that he would give more attention to people who voted him and less attention to those who gave him just 5%. I was like what? Did I hear him right?
Immediately he won, the old man was supposed to bring the whole nation together by soft words. That is wisdom. In a big country like Nigeria, you don't expect everyone to like you and vote for you. The General who wanted so badly to be addressed as a democrat was still talking tough and threatening to deal with this and that. This tough careless talk and being charged on by supporters was what led to the massive agitations and a lot of Igbo youths joining the agitations for Biafra.
Instead of pacify this young people, the language of the General President and his team continued to be military language instead of the language of democracy and a democrat. It is this careless language backed by careless decisions that influenced the perception that the man doesn't like the South East that has resulted to some of these wahala we are facing today.
However, every problem has a solution. Every problem is different from the other. The obsession of Buharist to tag the Niger Delta militias as terrorist like Boko Haram is another thing. I have heard a lot of people close to power who advise government say so. Like I have continued to tell people, you cannot treat different fevers with same medication just because both have the same symptoms, even quack doctors would tell you that.
The Federal Government should find ways of negotiating with these boys somehow. I don't know how. I am not being paid to proffer solution for the FG. Those who are being paid to do so should do so, but I know the Niger Delta issue is far from Boko Haram. If there is no peace there, it would be difficult to fund Nigeria's elite appetite for free oil money. Talking of diversifying the economy is still more of campaign talk and cheap talks still. If Buhari wanted to diversify the economy he should have made himself minister of agriculture from the beginning, but despite the importance of agriculture in today's economy and instead of handing over petroleum to experts and monitor them, the General President appointed himself Minister of Petroleum.
One year after, I am sure Buhari and Buharists have learned a thing or two about Nigeria, if they haven't then I would say this administration would not learn anything in 30 years if you give them 30 years to rule Nigeria.
